In 1995 Aprilia released the last of the great two stroke race replicas, the RS 250.
The bike was produced to capitalise on Aprilia's racing success in the 250 GP racing chamionships most notably with Max Biaggi aboard although there was also a Tetsua Harada replica sold.
The RS250 featured the engine from Suzuki's RGV250 with Aprilia heads and exhausts used to improve power and reliability. With a handmade frame and swingarm of exotic magnesium alloy, brembo wheels and brakes, a race style plastic fuel tank and upside down forks the bike was very expensive compared to far larger capacity Japanese contemporaries.
In 1998 there was a redesign that featured a larger GP style fairing, wider front wheel and more modern digital instruments. The traditional speedo cable was replaced with a digital one at the rear wheel to save the horsepower that the cable absorbed through friction.
